Custom Printed Packing Tape with Your Logo: Minimums, Pricing Tiers, and Artwork Tips

Custom printed packing tape is one of the cheapest ways to make a plain shipping box look like it came from a real brand. A logo across the seam of every carton tells your customer, the carrier, and the warehouse who sent it. It also makes tampering easier to spot. But tape is sold differently from boxes, and first-time buyers often get stuck on three questions: how many rolls do I have to buy, what does it cost per roll, and what artwork do I need to send?

This guide answers all three, using the actual case quantities and prices on our two printed tape products. It ends with a short checklist so your order goes to print without a delay.

Two kinds of printed tape: plastic or reinforced paper

Before you compare prices, decide what the tape is made of. That choice affects how the tape looks, how it seals, and how it fits your brand.

Printed pressure-sensitive tape (2" and 3" x 110 yds)

This is the familiar peel-and-stick packing tape that runs through a standard handheld dispenser. Our Custom Packing Tape with Logo comes in 2" and 3" widths, 110 yards per roll. It is the easiest option if your team already packs with a gun dispenser and you want your logo repeating along the tape.

Printed reinforced (water-activated) paper tape, 72mm x 450 ft

Reinforced paper tape has fiberglass strands in the paper and an adhesive that bonds when it gets wet. It bonds into the corrugated fibers instead of sitting on top, so it is the usual choice for heavier cartons and for brands that want a kraft, plastic-free look. Our Custom Printed Reinforced Paper Tape is 72mm wide and 450 feet per roll. You will need a water-activated tape dispenser to apply it.

If you want to try paper tape before committing to a printed run, start with plain Kraft Reinforced Paper Tape 72mm x 450ft. It is $99 per case of 10 rolls, or $285 for 3 cases (30 rolls).

How many rolls do you have to buy?

Printed tape is made on a printing plate, so it is sold by the case, not the roll. Both of our printed tapes start at 5 cases and step up to 10 and 20 cases.

For reinforced paper tape, one case is 10 rolls, so the three tiers are:

  • 5 cases (50 rolls) — $1,075 with black ink
  • 10 cases (100 rolls) — $2,150 with black ink
  • 20 cases (200 rolls) — $4,300 with black ink

That works out to about $21.50 per roll at every tier for black ink. A custom PMS ink color adds $50 to the order: $1,125, $2,200 or $4,350.

For 2" clear pressure-sensitive tape with black ink:

  • 5 cases — $1,251
  • 10 cases — $2,268
  • 20 cases — $4,392

Here the price per case drops from about $250 at 5 cases to about $220 at 20 cases. A custom PMS color adds $150 per order: $1,401, $2,418 or $4,542.

A quick way to choose your quantity

Count how many cartons you ship in a typical month and how many strips go on each box (an H-tape pattern uses more than a single strip across the top seam). Multiply to get monthly tape use, then pick the tier that covers about three to six months. Tape stores well in a cool, dry place, so the bigger tier is usually safe if you ship steadily. If this is your first branded order, 5 cases lets you test the look before you commit to 20.

Black ink or a custom PMS color?

Black ink on brown kraft or clear tape is the most economical choice, and it reads clearly at arm's length. A custom PMS match makes sense if your brand color matters more than a small upcharge, for example a red or green that customers already recognize. On reinforced paper tape the PMS option is only $50 extra, so it is an easy upgrade. On clear plastic tape the upcharge is $150, which is still small on a 10- or 20-case order.

One tip: thin lines and small text lose detail on tape faster than on a box, because tape is narrow and the print repeats. Bold logos and short taglines work best.

What artwork do you need to send?

This is where most printed tape orders get delayed. Tape printing needs vector artwork, meaning the logo is drawn with paths that can be scaled without blurring. Before you order, check that your file is:

  • A real vector file. An .AI, .EPS, .SVG or vector PDF that opens and shows the logo. If an .AI file opens blank, the artwork may be linked to another file that wasn't included, or it may be saved in a newer version than the printer can open. Re-save with fonts outlined and images embedded.
  • Clean lines. A logo that was auto-traced from a JPG often has jagged or rough edges that show up when it is printed large. If you see uneven outlines when you zoom in, ask your designer for the original source file.
  • Fonts converted to outlines. This keeps your lettering exactly as designed.
  • Colors labeled. Black, or the exact PMS code if you chose a custom color.

If you only have a PNG or JPG, tell us when you order. It is faster to sort out the artwork at the start than to find out after payment that the file can't be printed.

Plain or printed: when does branded tape pay off?

Printed tape is worth it when your boxes are plain stock cartons, because it gives you branding without the cost of printing every box. It also helps when you use several box sizes, since one tape design covers all of them. If you already ship in fully printed custom mailer boxes, plain or printed tape is mostly a matter of taste. Many brands still use logo tape on outer shipping cartons and keep the printed mailer inside.

Ordering checklist

  1. Choose a material: pressure-sensitive (2" or 3", 110 yds) or reinforced paper (72mm x 450 ft).
  2. Estimate monthly use and pick 5, 10 or 20 cases.
  3. Choose black ink or a custom PMS color.
  4. Prepare a vector logo file with fonts outlined and check that it opens.
  5. Place the order, then email your vector logo to info@buildaboxonline.com with your order number. We send a digital proof, and nothing prints until you approve it. Production takes 10–14 business days after proof approval.
